Bridging the Blues 2014

Exhibits & Performances

Opening September 12, 2014
E.E. Bass Building, 323 South Main Street, Greenville, Mississippi
From solemn moments standing silent and still among an endless acreage of cotton blooms and turn rows, to the vibrant movements of a familiar blues tune ringing in distant ears, you are sure to be encapsulated by the works of Bub Branton, Ellen Bidwell Dudley, Grace Buchanan, Cliff Speaks and Park Neff, all artists of the Mississippi Delta, inspired by the culture of the land and people. We are proud to announce these fine artists as our feature artists of the Bridging the Blues & Blues Week gallery opening on September 12. Nick Secoy will be our evening entertainment on the back porch and Cristin Barnard, the winner of the Hwy 61 Blues Poster contest will be available for a poster signing. And a huge thanks to Mighty Mississippi Music Festival for sponsoring this opening! We will have tickets on sale at the opening for the music festival. The show will remain on display through October 23.

Blues @ Home
August 21 through October 2, 2014
400 Second Street, Indianola, Mississippi
“Blues @ Home” is a collection of 30 portraits by Vicksburg-based artist H.C. Porter of Mississippi blues legends captured in their home settings. Porter traveled to the artists’ homes to photograph and interview them and then later created paintings based on the photographs. The portraits are displayed together with oral histories collected from the artists.  For more information on the project visit Porter’s website.

There will an opening reception for the exhibit on Thursday, August 21 from 6-8pm at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center. It will be followed by an “After Glow Party” featuring musicians captured in Porter’s portraits, including Jimbo Mathus and Eden Brent.

Delta in Blue
August 14 through December 31, 2014
Delta Cultural Center, 141 Cherry Street, Helena, Arkansas

This exhibit consists of photographs by Beverly Buys, Professor of Photography at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR. The prints are all cyanotypes, one of the earliest photographic processes, which are made when sensitized paper is exposed to ultraviolet light. The exhibit features images from the Arkansas Delta, all taken within a 100 mile radius of Helena.

Fine Tuned Strings: The Guitars of Delta Cultural Center
July 25 through December 31, 2014
Delta Cultural Center, 141 Cherry Street, Helena, Arkansas
9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Starting in 2003 and continuing to today, Delta Cultural Center has actively collected the stringed instrument that is most commonly associated with blues music, the guitar. The collection has at present over 40 guitars. These guitars have been shown in various exhibits to the delight of Blues music fans and visitors in the past. This new exhibit will display over 25 of these instruments placed together for the first time. The guitars are known for their colorful and unusual shaped bodies, and for the craftsmanship that went into their making. Many were made by the Gibson, Fender and Kay Guitar companies. And, of course, guitars are known for or revered by the musicians that have owned and played them. Many have hand written signatures, such as B.B. King, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Rufus Thomas, James Cotton, and Lonnie Shields. One guitar was signed by the members of the Rolling Stones. And there are instruments that were owned and used by CeDell Davis, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Nighthawk and Howlin’ Wolf. This new exhibit will show off the great acoustic and electric guitars from blues music history that are being preserved by The Delta Cultural Center.

Times may vary. Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s phenomenal musical success, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, is now on tour across North America. Critics are raving that this breathtaking production is “bigger and better than ever before.” This PHANTOM features a brilliant new scenic design by Paul Brown, Tony Award®-winning original costume design by Maria Bjornson, lighting design by Tony Award®-winner Paule Constable, new choreography by Scott Ambler, and a new staging by director Laurence Connor. The production, overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh, boasts many exciting special effects including the show’s legendary chandelier. The beloved story and thrilling score - with songs like “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” and “Masquerade” - is performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this PHANTOM one of the largest productions now on tour.
